The Role
Here at one.fıve, we’re on a mission to reduce single use plastic impact on our planet.
We’re looking for a Material Scientist to help bring sustainable, high-performance, and cost-effective fibre-based packaging prototypes to market, integrating both off-the-shelf and newly developed materials.
The ideal candidate will have strong wet lab skills, a high level of data literacy, and will work closely with the data team to enable data-driven decision-making. Additionally, you will provide critical domain expertise to support the development of key data models, aimed at accelerating innovation and reducing costs.
This role reports to Lucio D’Andrea, Head of Research & Development, and has key stakeholder relationships with team members throughout the company and occasionally external customers and business partners.
This is initially a 12 month FTC position.

How you'll help build one

- An expanded portfolio of customer-focused projects aimed at developing and validating sustainable packaging solutions.
- Contribute to the design, evaluation, and execution of prototypes, with a focus on integrating off-the-shelf technologies and developing new technologies in collaboration with both external partners and internal teams.
- Conduct necessary monitoring and reporting to ensure the successful completion of prototypes, capturing all learnings throughout the process.
- Identify and facilitate the transfer of promising technologies from public and private research centres to the market.
- Incorporate economic, market, and life cycle analyses into the decision-making process for prototypes.
- Deliver comprehensive reports and recommendations based on internal and external data, leveraging our various software platforms and dashboard tools to support informed decision-making.
- Serve as an internal thought leader on material science and sustainable packaging, sharing expertise and insights with the broader team to elevate overall knowledge and capabilities.
- You’re passionate about sustainability!
- Experience in designing and executing experiments in the lab. You are eager to participate in the creation and testing of prototypes, in close collaboration with our R&D Operations team.
- Optimally experience with polymer science and surface chemistry
- Extensive commercial industrial experience in applied Material Science
- Ideally several years working in a commercial platform business
- Ambitious in organising and coordinating the overall project plan from initial idea to final implementation
- Persistent in designing and conducting trials to generate data that allow us to develop better and faster for the future
- Enjoy collaborative and information sharing environment and have a challenging mindset
- Fluency in English, as this is our working language
- Fluency in German, a bonus, to speak with customers and external partners occasionally

- Team call: If successful, you'll then move on to discuss current company culture and ways of working with other senior members of the team. To demonstrate your ways of working, you may be asked to present a small task to the team as part of your call.
- Final Culture and Values Call with the Founder(s). Providing you with a solid understanding of the future aims, values and aspirations of the company.
